National Colloquium

A National Colloquium on the Future of Indonesian in Australian Universities will be held at Murdoch University, Perth, from 9-11 February 2011. Indonesian language educators, representatives of relevant government departments and professional organisations, university administrators, and other local and international stakeholders are invited to attend.

Visitors to Perth may note that the Perth Festival commences with a spectacular opening event on the evening of Friday 11 February, and continues for several weeks.

Program

The Colloquium will run across the full three days of 9-11 February. Registration will open from 8.15am on Wednesday 9 February. The Colloquium's formal proceedings will conclude at 5pm on Friday 11 February. The three days have been provisionally themed as follows:

  • Day 1 – State of the Discipline;
  • Day 2 – Collaboration for Mutual Benefit; and
  • Day 3 – National Strategies.

The Colloquium Program will include a mix of plenary sessions and smaller seminar style discussions. Please note the provisional status of this current "draft" program. Listed session times and content may be subject to further revision in the weeks leading up to the event, so please keep checking this website for updates.

A discussion paper outlining the provisional findings of Professor Hill's Fellowship is now available. It is hoped that both the findings and the range of possible strategies for the future canvassed in this paper will stimulate discussion and debate in advance of the Colloquium.

Location

The Colloquium will be held on the campus of Murdoch University, South St, Murdoch, Western Australia.

The Murdoch Campus is located on South Street in the suburb of Murdoch, about 15 kilometres south of the Perth Central Business District and eight kilometres east of the port city of Fremantle. South Street is a major arterial road to Fremantle and forms the northern boundary of the campus, whilst Farrington Road, adjacent to North Lake, provides the southern boundary. The Kwinana Freeway is the main access route to the University for travel from Perth and its northern suburbs, and from suburbs south of Murdoch. The new MetroRail linking Perth to Mandurah, with a nearby Murdoch train station, provides another route to access the Murdoch Campus.

Volunteers needed

Murdoch University is seeking enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for Indonesia and a concern for the future of Indonesian language study at Australia’s universities to help with the Colloquium. Volunteers are needed for 3 days - from 9 to 11 February 2011. You can volunteer for one day, or for all three days.
